“AI Won’t Take Your Job, but Someone Using AI Will.”

A new trustee officially joined the Meadows Valley School Board Tuesday night. At the regular meeting on February 13, 2024, Stephanie Becker took the oath to safely discharge all the duties of the office of trustee to the best of her ability. Other yearly official selections were made at this meeting also. Barb Dixon will continue as Chairperson, Jeffrey Luff as Vice Chair. And Carol Whitney as Clerk/Treasurer.
Dee Fredrickson read a report about the upcoming Science Field Trip written by Randall Annunziato. The trip will be 3 days, 16 miles, exploration and backpacking in Hells Canyon with overnight stops at Kirkwood and Sheep Creek Ranch. It will include a jet boat ride to Hells Canyon Dam with the last night spent at Big Bar Campground. Many lessons and activities are planned for the trek which will take place April 8 - 12.
8th grade will be NAEP testing this year. It’s a National Assessment of Educational Progress often called the Nation’s Report Card. Schools are randomly picked every few years to participate.
All instructional staff and administrators will be going to McCall for the next series of High Reliability Schools , on February 23. McCall Donnelly, Cascade, and Salmon River will also attend.
Brandy Padgett reported that there were 2 high school boys that played basketball in McCall this year and coming up will be track and golf. There is a new coach this year and fundraising and Booster Club members are needed,
Dee and Jeffrey went to a Tech Conference in Boise. They learned a lot about Artificial Intelligence (AI), computer safety and data security. A quote that really stuck out was “AI won’t take your job, but someone using AI will.”
A safety risk assessment was done on the building. The info from this will be used to apply for a school safety grant.
High School students will be attending College Day in McCall on February 20.
The Vice President of Student Council, Mariah Rambo, was present to propose a graduation date change from May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. to May 25th at 2:00 p.m. The board approved the change.
Three teachers are resigning after this year: Jeff Parnett, Sara Walker and Greg Dittmer. An Ag teacher is being sought in order to be able to give more electives. Agriculture covers a lot of possible classes, for example, Natural Sciences and Horticulture. The school is hoping to get skilled community members to come in and teach about their skill as an elective idea.
This is the last year for Summit Learning. Next year will be Canvas, the #1 Learning Management System. Canvas makes online learning, in-person, or a mix of the two more efficient. Summit catered more to each student’s individual goals.
Some parents in the audience brought some bullying activity to the attention of the board.
Trustee Chris Peterson, a volunteer FF, let the board know that updates are needed on the maps provided for emergencies.
Next meeting will be March 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the school library.
