1902 – The Gold Rush

This composite photo shows Council in 1902. The camera was looking west across the town square. 1 = The Tank Saloon. 2= Whiteley store (at least soon after this) 3= Unidentified. 4= J.L.B. Carroll’s store. 5 = Plaza Hotel (built as the Moser Hotel). 6= Winkler blacksmith shop. 7 = May be a boarding house. 8 = Peters & Lowe store (later Lowe & Jones store). 9 = Fifer building. The blank space to the right of the Fifer building where the big Cohen & Criss store should be explained next week.

Recent History Corner & Yester Years

1901

This composite photo is looking west on Moser Avenue. This horse has been thrown because he wouldn’t cooperate when being shod. Bill Winkler is the big man above rear of horse and is also visible in front of the blacksmith shop in the right portion of the combined photos. The Council Journal newspaper office is in right rear. The building at left may be Steve Richardson’s store that stood where the Senior Center is today and was formerly the site of the Pomona Hotel.

1900 – Part 2

These photos showing Council High School football players Fred (Dick) Mink (left) and Joe Hancock in 1925 seem to show no padding on their upper body, leather headgear and no face protection.

1900

This is what the Bert Harpham Legion Post in Council looked like when it was first built. This photo came from the American Legion Weekly magazine for April 4, 1924. The building still stands on the SW corner of Moser and Main, and is now a private home.

1899 – Part 2

Winkler & Cox shop. Bill and Lewis Winkler were probably the main instigators of having this blacksmith shop built in 1899. This business was part of the migration of Council growth toward where the railroad depot was planned. Notice the new school on the hill in the background.
