1895 – Part 2

Charley Anderson’s hotel / stage stop at Lick Creek. Exact year is unknown but it’s in the 1890s. Charley was one of the pioneer mining claim discoverers in the Seven Devils Mining District. Until many years after this, the road going on to Bear went right by this building and across the hills shown in the background here.

The Duree siblings in 1925. Their parents were Nora and Isaac Jackson ‘Jackie’ Duree. Sitting, left to right: Viola Duree Gould (Mrs. George Gould), Dorothy Ellen Duree Potter, Ida Duree Moser (married Edgar Moser). Standing, left to right: Nimon ‘Nim’ Duree, Ulysses David Duree (1870 - 1944), Averine ‘Bud’ Duree. David Duree married Ida Moser (daughter of George & Elizabeth Moser) so this Ida Moser became Ida Duree. Ida Duree (maiden name) married Edgar Moser and became Ida Moser.

I may feature this photo too often, but it’s such a good portrayal of what Council looked like in its earliest days. It was taken, looking south, in1896 but shows a few spots relevant to 1894. 1 = Council Valley Hotel. 2= Hancock’s General Mercantile. The fence at the bottom right shows where the “John Peters’ store stood before it burned. 6 = Peters’ barn. 7= The store Peters established and then shared with Isaac McMahan. 8 = Moser Hotel. 9= Moser barn. 10 = Original Moser cabin.
