1896

I was wrong about the photo featured a couple weeks ago of the McMahan & Peters store. That store wasn’t built yet when the Signal credited ‘the artist’ with a photo. I’m now convinced this is the ‘artist’ photo taken in June of 1895. It has the freighters in the foreground that the newspaper referred to; they were transporting the first gold dredge to be taken into Warren. McMahan’s ‘Cash Store’ is in the background. He bought it from John Peters. After the new Peters & McMahan store was built in 1896, I think the old Cash Store was used for storage. The Moser Hotel is just visible on the right edge of this photo. The arrow points to blacksmith Mark Winkler who is working on replacing (or reattaching) a shoe on one of the horses in this team. The blacksmith shop was just out of sight to the left.

This shot was taken closer to 1900, but it shows the Winkler’s horse-powered threshing machine in front of their blacksmith shop on Moser Avenue.

1895 – Part 2

Charley Anderson’s hotel / stage stop at Lick Creek. Exact year is unknown but it’s in the 1890s. Charley was one of the pioneer mining claim discoverers in the Seven Devils Mining District. Until many years after this, the road going on to Bear went right by this building and across the hills shown in the background here.

The Duree siblings in 1925. Their parents were Nora and Isaac Jackson ‘Jackie’ Duree. Sitting, left to right: Viola Duree Gould (Mrs. George Gould), Dorothy Ellen Duree Potter, Ida Duree Moser (married Edgar Moser). Standing, left to right: Nimon ‘Nim’ Duree, Ulysses David Duree (1870 - 1944), Averine ‘Bud’ Duree. David Duree married Ida Moser (daughter of George & Elizabeth Moser) so this Ida Moser became Ida Duree. Ida Duree (maiden name) married Edgar Moser and became Ida Moser.
