Christmas is coming to Council, and it’s starting to look like it! On Saturday, November 29, volunteers from the Council Chamber of Commerce and the community started decorating the town in preparation for the upcoming holiday season and Christmas events that begin this week. Every year, the first weekend in December is marked by a multitude of Christmas festivities in Council, including the Christmas Craft Fair, The Antler Contest, the Tree lighting, and the Santa House. This year the same well loved events will be returning, along with a few new and welcome additions!

The Council Christmas Craft Fair will be running from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 and the Assembly of God Church and will feature a wide variety of local vendors. The 11th Annual FFA Antler Contest and Silent Auction will also be held Saturday, however, regular attendees will note that the time this year has changed, and the event will begin at 3:00 p.m. instead of in the morning. The Council Chamber of Commerce will also be organizing the Kids Craft Make and Take at various businesses around town and the Santa House from 12-3:00 p.m. on Saturday. This year the Santa House is moving to the building at 122 Illinois (the temporary Huptye location). Also new this year, the Christmas Tree Lighting will not be on the same day as the rest of the Christmas events and has been moved to the evening of Sunday, December 7th. Additionally, there will be a Christmas light parade preceding the Tree Lighting! The parade will begin at 5:30 and the Tree Lighting will directly follow.

The Council Valley Free Library is also upping their Christmas events this year, and will be hosting the 1st annual Kids Christmas Extravaganza on December 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00. They are planning to turn the library into a winter wonderland and have holiday crafts and activities, snacks and a hot chocolate bar, a photo station, and story time with a special guest at 11:00 a.m. The Library is also hosting for the first time this year a Gingerbread House Competition! Children and adults can bring their completed gingerbread houses to the library to be displayed by Thursday, Dec. 11th and the houses will be judged and prizes awarded during the Christmas Extravaganza! 15 free Gingerbread kits are available at the library starting this week to be used to participate in the contest, but community members are welcome to create their own as well using all “edible” materials.

Thank you to all the volunteers and community members who come together to put on these wonderful events and bring holiday cheer to our town!
