Council Jujitsu Academy Celebrates One Year

On Friday, April 19th, the Council Jujitsu Academy celebrated its one year anniversary. Since starting last year, the Academy has grown to include over 24 children and eight adults. On Friday, the students celebrated with Pizza, cupcakes, and for some of them, a stripe promotion for their belts!
Founder of the academy, Anna Cook, started practicing Jujitsu when she was 37 while living in Dubai. When she moved to Council, it was one of her top priorities to start teaching locally. She says she loves Jujitsu because it keeps her sharp. “It’s problem solving, it makes you understand your body, your weaknesses and your strengths.”
Classes meet at the Rec Center on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. One interesting thing about the adults class, perhaps due to the time it is currently scheduled at, is that it has become a haven for women’s self defense, as the women tend to outnumber the men in class. It is not uncommon to see a mom with her baby at class (who may sometimes get passed around among the students when mom is sparing)! There is even currently a pregnant woman training, with some modifications. “It’s a great example for the children, because Jujitsu is hard,” said Coach Anna, “you never stop learning, that’s what’s great about Jujitsu.”
Next Anna Cook is focusing on preparing the team for competitions, several of the students are planning to compete in Boise this May.
