Johnson Appointed to Board

The Council School Board met for their regular meeting on March 11. All three regular board members and district staff were present.
The board had previously declared a vacancy in, and advertised for applicants, for Trustee Zone 5. This seat was vacated when Bob Grossen resigned recently. Two applicants were present to be interviewed for this seat - Kyle Johnson and Keith Heil. After over 30 minutes of interview questions and deliberations the board voted to appoint Kyle Johnson to serve until December 2027, the remainder of Grossen’s original term. The board has one more vacancy to fill for Zone 1 Trustee, which was vacated when Steve Ryals resigned.
There was discussion regarding math curriculum for all grade levels. Currently, the district uses two different curriculums for math - Eureka for the elementary and CPM for the upper grades. According to comments made during the meeting there are few companies offering a math curriculum for all grades, and fewer still who offer a good product.
District maintenance manager Royce Bauer presented summer construction projects and ongoing work on the biomass system. The district has approximately $1.1M from the state for maintenance and upgrades to the buildings. They discussed using the interest accrued on these funds to replace components of the biomass system and leaving the principle untouched for future projects.
Action items included approving an overnight trip to Leavenworth and Seattle, WA for National Honor Society students; setting up a welding scholarship to help students with equipment, accepting revisions to several policies and finalizing next year’s calendar.
