Lots To Do on the 4th
Independence Day is just around the corner! The annual 4th of July Celebration in Council is the town’s biggest event of the year. This year, the country is celebrating the 250 year anniversary and for Council that means more! More prize money, more activities, more of everything! Here are some of the upcoming events planned for this year’s 4th of July.
The Council Chamber of Commerce is once again planning a two day event starting on July 3, with a large vendor market downtown and the return of the soap box derby races starting at 11:00 a.m.. That evening, there will be a street dance downtown with live music by Rancho Notorious, a band from Mountain Home.
On Saturday the 4th, the day will kick off with the flag raising ceremony at 8:00 a.m. downtown in City Park, while the Council Community Church hosts a community breakfast from 7-10:00 a.m. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Porcupine Car Show will also be taking place. At 11 the parade starts downtown, and hopefully this time it won’t rain on the parade! This year there will be cash prizes for parade floats, $300 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd. Anyone can enter the parade for free but there is a fee if the float wishes to be judged.
After the Parade the Porcupine Races begin. This is the 55th year of Council’s World Famous Porcupine Races and there is a $1,500 purse!
One of the biggest changes to the festivities this year is the expansion of the Loggers Jubilee, formerly known as the Saw Contest. The Jubilee starts at 2:00, after the porcupine races. The competition has out grown the former space and they are moving the event to the Boise Cascade Park, which will also be hosting a softball tournament on the 4th and the 5th. The Loggers Jubilee is also adding several exciting new events this year, including Log Burling, Choker Setting, and Cross Cut Saw! The new Tug of War event will also be returning!
It will be a jam packed day full of food, fun, friends, and freedom, and at dusk, the annual firework display will finish off the days festivities.
