Midvale City Council Asphalt Prices Affect Airport Repaving Project
At Monday’s regular Midvale City Council meeting, airport manager, Karson Craig, reported that the planned repaving of the runway and parking area will have to be smaller than originally planned. Since asphalt prices have risen from $80-90/ton up to $150/ton, the width of the new pavement will be 50 feet instead of the planned 60 feet. Karson said that is still plenty wide for planes to land and take off. The resurfacing project will be paid for with the $570,000 grant money and is planned for the summer of 2024. The planned resurfacing of the parking and tie-down area will have to wait until another source of money can be found. He also reported that the plan is to grind up the old asphalt and pile it at the airport. It will make very good gravel for the city to use on other projects.
Three action items were approved: Attorney Dan Chadwick has been retained for another year at the rate of $500 per month and $89 mileage when he travels to Midvale. A kennel license was approved for Boden Meyer (who attended with his baby girl) and for Sam Clagg.
The town Christmas lighting will be Sunday, November 26, at 7:00 p.m. according to organizer BJ Whitener. Her family, and a few others, have been working on installing the lights and were asking the city council if it might pitch in $300 for more lights. Mayor Brian Graham said it would be on next month’s agenda but the council was in favor of the expense.
Introduced to the council and patrons present was future councilman Jeremy Kirk who will be sworn into office at the January meeting. Since he was the only candidate for Phyllis Widner’s seat, there was no election, as provided by state law. Phyllis says, “It’s time to let someone younger do it.” Attorney Chadwick said he would provide Jeremy and all the council persons with a binder containing all the current meeting laws. He also recommended that all attend online classes with ICRIMP regarding risk management.
Clerk Mariah Johnson gave the council the end of year financial report for 2022-2023 showing which funds stayed under budget and which went over. The annual audit will be December 6 and will all be done online. The auditor will attend in person to give the final report. There is an Association of Idaho Cities webinar on November 30 that she encouraged the councilmen to attend.
The next regular meeting of the council will be December 11 at 7:00 p.m..
