The Meadows Valley Library summer reading program has encouraged kids to read more than 1,000 books since June 5! The reading program for kids and adults spanned over eight weeks and culminated in prize drawings, top reader awards, and a fun water games party in the city park.

The kids program included a gathering every Wednesday that featured organized story time, a craft or activity, and a treat. The library also hosted daily activities and opportunities to turn in reading reports and get prizes. 101 kids ages 1 to 17 signed up for the program.

The combined total of books read by the children was 1,205. The top readers in each age category were:

Ages 0 - 4: Tie between Branch & Locklynn Swenson - 54 books each

Ages 5 - 8: Graham Gardner - 59 books

Ages 9 - 12: Timberly Swenson - 84 books (she read the most books this summer!)

Ages 13 - 17: Mary Reynaga - 76 books

Top readers won a medal and a Barnes & Noble gift card.

Not to be outdone by the kids, 23 adults signed up for the adult reading program. They read a combined total of 38 books over the eight weeks. Tashia Kerby read the most books and won a Barnes & Noble gift card. For every book read, adults could put an entry in for the final prize drawing. The random prize drawing winner was Colleen Johnson. She won an Idaho themed gift package that included a tote bag, water bottle, two Idaho books, a wooden Idaho bookmark, and a potato figure.

The final celebration in the park has become a fun tradition featuring a slip ‘n’ slide, “dunk tank”, water squirter fight, water rockets, water slide, bounce house, and even small pools for the littlest readers. 52 kids along with parents and younger siblings attended the party. The kids had snow cones and cookies for treats, won prizes, and celebrated a fun summer of reading.

Library Director Audrey Crogh shared a special message of thanks to reading volunteer Marlene Clark who came and read to the kids most weeks of the program. Clark always wore program themed costumes that added to the fun. Crogh also gave thanks to the party volunteers who helped with set up, clean up, and overall support: Tim Crogh, Tyler Crogh, Amanda Waddell, Abbie Crogh, Remi Crogh and Sully Crogh. Thank you to library staff and volunteers for a wonderful summer reading program.
