3, 2, 1 - light the tree! The City of New Meadows held their annual Christmas Tree Lighting event on Sunday, December 7.

Event activities kicked off at the library with ornament making, photo opportunities, and treats. Kids and adults put together wooden stick ornaments decorated like elves, penguins, Santas, and reindeer as well as using the “Treemendous Ornament Decorator” to make spin art bulbs.

Ahead of the festivities, a decorating crew worked to string the city park with colorful lights all around and set up the lighted tunnel. In their weekly email, the city extended thanks to the volunteers who helped decorate the park for Christmas, specifically Angie Mettie, Jessica Lillehaug, Dee Lillehaug, John Lillehaug, Lindsay Fausett, Linnea Hall and Philip Good.

From the library, two flat bed trailers provided by Dean and Sandy Dryden and Mike Glick took everyone on a hay ride around the north end of town and over to the park. Kids ran across the park tossing snow balls and a countdown led to cheers as the lights went on. A tunnel of lights with a view of the city tree was a top spot for family photos. Music cheered the crowd outside.

Across the way outside the Historic Depot, fire pits were set up along with fixings for s’mores. A line developed quickly in front of Santa and Mrs. Claus while the Adams County Historical Society members cheered spirits with Christmas carols.

Inside the Depot, guests warmed up with coffee, apple cider, hot chocolate, and cookies featuring a special treat of Mountain Roots Orchard’s fresh pressed cider. Mrs. Claus passed out candy canes and read stories to children as everyone enjoyed a festive evening.
