Even though you can’t tell by looking at the old recycle center, a lot of work is being done on the Childcare/Youth Center that it will become. Behind the scenes, architects, and engineers have been drawing up plans on how to turn it into a daycare, a preschool, an after-school program and youth center. Ian Hoffman and Allison Munz, from GHM Architects have been presenting ideas to a Daycare Advisory Committee and the New Meadows City Council.

The plan is to have the preschool done by October 2024. A Childcare Foundation is being formed and preliminary work is being done to prepare for the use of the facility. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the school is being drawn up and Southwest District Health Department is giving food service area requirements.

Training will be offered for those interested in working at the Childcare facility and the school is pursuing dual credit opportunities for students who want to be involved. When the preschool is ready to open, there will be flashing crosswalk signs at Taylor and McLain streets and their intersections with Peterson Memorial Avenue. Currently, there are 20 kids signed up for next year. Be watching for the transformation to begin!
