On Monday, January 12, Taylor Powell was sworn in as a new member of the Cambridge City Council. Powell, a mother of five, will serve a four-year term on the council. Powell, whose husband volunteers for Cambridge Fire and Ambulance, views serving on the Cambridge City Council as a way for her to also give back.

“I was looking for a way to be more involved in the community,” she said.

Powell and her family moved to Cambridge in 2022.

“We loved the town” she said. “We had come up here many times in previous years.” Powell’s parents had first relocated to the area, and Powell and her family were excited to join them.

“There are so many wonderful people here,” she said.

Powell, who was born and raised in Idaho, is a fan of small towns where “the teachers that taught you also taught your parents.”

Powell’s vision for Cambridge involves balancing its size with opportunities for measured growth.

“I definitely think the appeal to the residents is that it is a small town,” said Powell. “We don’t want to necessarily lose that small town feel.”

She is cognizant of the need to carefully calibrate economic growth while also addressing issues such as housing.

“There has to be a balance to this growth,” Powell said. “The growth that I am thinking of is: How can we enrich our community more?”

Powell, who homeschools her children, is committed to seeing more opportunities open up for area youth. She applauds the Cambridge Library for its contributions, especially its summer reading program.

“I am definitely a big advocate for the library,” she said. “I love reading.”

Powell supports seeing more enrichment activities for children and other ways for youth to get involved.

“I definitely think more programs for our youth could be worked into the community,” she said.

As a city council member, Powell plans to be deeply focused on the needs of the community. One way she plans to tune in to the Cambridge community’s needs is to be an “earpiece.”

“I am here to work for the town,” she said. “I am here to listen to the community and do what I can for them.”

Most importantly, Powell would like to see Cambridge continue to be a great place to raise families, for seniors, and for anyone who wants to enjoy everything the area has to offer.

“I just want to see the residents of our community being taken care of,” she said. “I want it to always continue being a safe place for people to live and grow up in.”
