Spring Celebration of Art and Music with Meadows Valley Students

Middle and High School Students from Meadows Valley School showcased their talent in art and music last Thursday, May 8 at the Historic Depot. Art teacher Cynthia Dittmer and music teacher Linda Kollmann have brought a love of art and music to their students this year.
Dittmer joined the school for the second semester this year. In her high school drawing and painting class she began the semester with watercolor painting and step-by-step practice in this medium. Later on, classes worked on acrylic canvas paintings in the French Impressionist style. The show featured recreations of work by many famous artists including Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet.
In Dittmer’s high school sculpture and ceramics class, students began with 3D art and wire sculpting, human proportions, and action poses creating self-portrait wire figures. Students continued the semester with creating and painting animal sculptures in the style of Oaxacan carvings and sculptures called alebrijes. The class will finish the year with clay work and throwing pottery.
Junior High art students in Art Foundations featured their work in pattern-making as well as drawing and shading realistic faces. The latter work featured half and half famous faces. One side of the face was a black and white photograph while the other featured pencil drawing and shading by the students. Self portraits in similar style were also displayed. Foundations students will also finish the year learning clay work by creating mugs and vases.
Kollman’s music students entertained with classic tunes on saxophone, flute, and clarinet. A highlight was a performance of “Crazy Train” on tenor sax. The Star Spangled Banner and a rendition of Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” were sung by eighth grade students. Kollman even joined in on the fun playing clarinet duets with a ninth grade student.
Students helped to set up the event at the Depot and provided refreshments of cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and popcorn to the many attendees. The event was truly a celebration of great talent and learning.
