The kids of the 2024 Summer Reading program in New Meadows are ready for the party to begin!

So many books are stacked on the book cart at the Meadow Valley Public Library in the summer! It’s awesome to see how much everyone has read. The Summer Reading Program had 94 kids signed up this year!

In years past, pages were read in exchange for tokens to buy prizes. Changes have been made and the last couple of years books have been read and mini book reports completed in exchange for tickets to win prizes. Library director Audrey Crogh likes to change it up once in a while so it doesn’t become boring. The library’s main objective is to encourage kids to read and it works! She also has other incentives to encourage visits to the library during the summer like hiding a sticker every day for them to find and having a “guess how many” game every week. Some of the prizes won are raffle tickets for a weekly drawing and a grand prize drawing at the end of the eight week program.

Of the weekly winners of the “Guess how Many Items in the Jar” game, Kashlynn Kautz had the closest guess being only five away from guessing how many Gummy Bear packages were in the jar.

There were four raffle winners each week. Lindsey Fausett won the grand prize, a telescope, at the end of the program.

Out of everybody, Blaize Becker ended up reading the most through the summer, having read 69 books! The Reynaga kids, Mary, Boaz, Richie and Phillip read almost that much. The Swenson’s, Timberly, Boomer, Branch and Lochlynn were also in the running along with Elijah and Jax Rhodes! All reading in the 50 + book neighborhood! Some authors the kids liked most were Jeff Kinney, Dav Pilkey, Mo Willems and Dr. Seuss.

The library collects $10/child sponsorships throughout the program to prepare for next year, though no child or family is ever charged for this program. Thirteen people/couples donated during these months totaling $1,042! That sure helps! Thanks so much!

Adults (16 & up) can participate in Summer Reading too! There were thirteen adult participants this year. Pat Brady was the raffle winner of a library coffee mug, water bottle, bag and a Barnes & Noble gift card! Pat read ten novels!. The most liked author for adults was David Baldacci.

The whole program came to an end with a celebration party at the park in which 51 kids attended. The weather was perfect! So many years it is swelteringly hot. The fun included snow cones, cookies, a bounce house, a 3 slide water slide, a slip-n-slide, a splash tower game, water rockets and water squirters. Thank you to Audrey’s whole family who comes to help with this event!

Librarian, Audrey Crogh and other library workers hand out well earned prizes out to the kids who signed up for the Summer Reading Program.
