Summer Reading Program Ends with a Party
All good things must come to an end. Summer Reading at MVPL is over for another year. “All Together Now” was the statewide theme. In New Meadows the library showed community togetherness by having the weekly programs include visits from Smokey the Bear and Jessica Kearney-Reeves from our local Forest Service Office, Amber Young and the gang from Idaho Fish & Game, Mayor Julie Good & Hunter Brown from New Meadows Public Works, Officer Nikki Sauerland from the Adams County Sheriff’s Department, and New Meadows First Responders Leandra Smith & Johnny Brown from Meadows Valley Fire & EMS. Thank you everyone for coming to educate and entertain our kids!
On July 19th, the last regular program celebrated the library as part of the community. Two library themed books were read and the craft was making laminated bookmarks. Afterwards, the kids collected tickets to play games and win prizes. Each week there was a drawing with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Prizes included candy, toys and books. Also, once a week there was a winner of a “Guess How Many Items in the Jar” game. Every day, kids could come in and play spin-the-wheel, pop-the-dice, disk drop, magnetic fishing, punch prize and mystery box. They got to do all these things by reading books and turning in book reviews to earn tickets.
The Summer Reading program ended on Wednesday, July 26, with the highlight of some kids’ summer, the water party at the park. Fifty-six of the 108 registered Summer Readers came to enjoy the fun. It started out with snow cones, cookies and drinks. Then everyone got to play on the water slide, a bounce house, and a slip-n-slide. There were also some kiddie pools to play in, water rockets to set off into the air, and a Wet Head game that is kind of like musical chairs, but they pass around a hat never knowing who’s gonna get wet! Next, those that wanted to, had an always exciting water squirter fight and finally the kids got to have sort of an Easter Egg hunt with all the remaining small prizes, and a drawing for all the remaining larger prizes and books. Mary Reynaga won the grand prize drawing that all were hoping for all summer, and her prizes included an inflatable light up chair, light up plush pillow and fiber optic floor lamp! Mary definitely read the most books this summer, and her prize was well deserved!
The winner of the Adult Summer Reading this year was Chris Slettum who had the most tickets in the drawing for a coffee mug and over $100 dollars in local gift certificates. Adults turn in book reviews for every book they read. Each review gets their name in for a drawing at the end of the program.
A big thank you to Audrey, the library director, her family, that helps out immensely, staff, parents and sponsors! And thanks to the kids for all their hard work. Keep reading!!!
