Teachers, Athletes Benefit from Senior Projects
Two very practical senior projects were presented to the Midvale School trustees at their regular meeting Monday evening. Both will benefit the school.
Michael Kysar brought samples of his name plates which he made for all the high school teachers. He used the shop CNC machine to cut the sheet metal with each name and then mounted them on wooden bases.
Elias DeVries built an exercise weight sled which is installed under the roof outside the weight room. It has a pipe tube base and holds as many 45-pound weights as the athlete can pull or push. It sports a CNC designed plate with the Titan logo. Most of the cost of $427 was spent on the green padded astroturf track which is 2’ x 48’ long.
Superintendent Matt Jones gave the board a list of short-term and long-term goals that they might want to pursue to take the district in the right direction. “We want to offer a good product,” he said. The board tabled the issue until they can review the goals. He asked them to add more if they want and to adjust those listed.
The first one is Student Achievement and college/career readiness in agriculture, family and consumer sciences and business. A long term goal would be to add more career pathways like healthcare or nursing.
A second goal is to stabilize and grow enrollment by outreach to families and expanding access. A long term goal might be to expand early childhood education to accept more students and increase classroom days.
The third goal concerns facilities and safety with locks, pedestrian safety, and camera software. Also it might include plans for the future use of the old football field.
The fourth one is to attract, support and retain high-quality staff, including professional growth and development. There was some discussion of funding continuing education for teachers.
Family and community communication and partnerships were the fifth goal. This might be done through a quarterly newsletter.
The sixth addressed responsible governance, legal compliance, and fiscal stability. Trustee Piper asked about compliance with state policies and ways to insure that the district is in line with those.
Jones reported on his teacher evaluations which are nearly done. The Christmas program is December 17. The school is getting two new high school students, one being a foreign exchange student. February 20 at 9:00 a.m. will be the CPR class. Idaho Power instructor Mitch Butler will conduct the four-hour class. Contact the school to sign up.
The board voted to give out Christmas bonuses to all staff using the funds that have accumulated from investment interest and VISA points.
