Water Tower Alight in Cambridge

Two hundred people gathered at the Cambridge Water Tower Park to watch the 5th annual Lighting of the Water Tower event. Sara Kindall MC’d and local musician Dave Nudo kicked off the event with a song. The Pastor of Cambridge First Baptist Church, John Loewen was invited to come up on stage. Pastor Loewen said a prayer and was given the honor of turning on the lights. He led the crowd in a count down from 10 and people cheered as the water tower lights came on. After the excitement died down, Dave Nudo performed another of his original songs. Then Hailey Kindall sang “Hallelujah” and the event ended with Santa Claus coming up on stage and handing out candy to the kids.
The Lighting of the Water Tower event was spearheaded by Sara Kindall, Brandi Lincoln and Megan Warren in November of 2020. Sara saw a post on Facebook that asked why Cambridge didn’t have a Christmas tree lighting event. Sara decided that was something the community needed and with the help of her friends, they decided they would find a way to make it happen. The water tower, standing at 100 feet, is located in the center of town seemed like the perfect “tree”.
The first year, the community was able to get one side of the water tower hung with lights, thanks to volunteers, community donations and the Cambridge Commercial club. By the 4th year, all 4 sides were completed. The water tower has 48 strands of lights in total. Each strand hangs 85 feet, with one bulb per foot. There are 4 stars at the top of the water tower catwalk with around 200 lights per star. That’s a lot of lights! Carson Kindall engineered the hanging of the lights and ensured it was done by experienced climbers with all safety measures in place. The lights are quite awe inspiring and have been added to the Boise Christmas light map. The Cambridge water tower lights can be seen for miles away and stay lit all winter long. Getting turned off after Valentine’s Day in February.
Throughout the year, the Cambridge Commercial club hosts events to raise money for the lighting of the water tower. And, with the community’s support the event will continue to light up Cambridge every winter for years to come.
