It was probably the shortest parade ever held in Midvale on the Fourth of July. Indeed, three last minute noisy firetrucks loaded with candy comprised the entirety of the event. Those fortunate to brave the raindrops were able to have their sweet tooths satisfied.

Because of rain and the threat of lightening, the pool board made a last minute decision to cancel the parade and also to move the BBQ from the park to the VFW Hall. The city also opened city hall for the overflow crowd. Tables were also set up outside under the porch. It was a very bonding experience, getting up close and personal with friends and neighbors. The pool board provided amazing service and fantastic food, including pulled pork with all the trimmings, potluck salads and desserts. The kids meal was a hamburger or hotdog, chips and a granola bar.

When the rain let up for a bit, the chicken scramble provided the chance for any child to go home with a new pet, much to their parents’ delight.

Duck raffle tickets were going fast on the pool’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MidvalePool) so check there for the latest information and date of drawing for $1,000 worth of prizes.

The statement from the board says, “It was a 4th of July we will remember forever! We never thought heavy rain would bring down our beloved 4th of July Parade, but it did and for that we want to apologize. We know how much the community and our kids look forward to this parade every year and believe us, we were disappointed right alongside you. Please understand, this decision wasn’t made lightly. Our Pool Board is very small and with many moving parts required to move the barbecue to a different venue in the middle of a downpour, we had to make a decision very quick. We truly didn’t want to put anyone at risk once we saw the flash of lightning, heard the thunder and saw the road drains fill & flood the streets!

“The Pool Board would like to sincerely thank everyone who volunteered, supported and helped organize & then re-organize our event! Your time, energy and resources meant the world to us and we’re committed to making sure your efforts are not wasted. To the Midvale Fire Department, thank you for EVERYTHING. We couldn’t do this event without each and every one of you and even though we canceled the parade, you still went out and threw candy to our kids and showed true American Pride.

“We would like to take the opportunity to say how grateful we are to all who came out in the pouring rain to support the Midvale Swimming Pool at the VFW Hall for the BBQ! The food was delicious, the company was perfect and most importantly everyone stayed dry...ish! We may have been unable to open the pool for the kids, have the duck raffle or play cornhole but the kids got to participate in the Chicken Scramble once it stopped raining, and in case you missed it, it was a HOOT!”
