Constitution

 David Kaupanger, Council
June 24, 2026

I was talking to a young man recently that graduated from Council High about the fact that when I was in high school we had a debate about whether or not our Constitution was a “living, breathing document”. He replied “It is”. I told him that it is not.

There is an old saying that goes “say what you mean and mean what you say”. That is what a document is meant to do. When its framers had our Constitution neared completion they knew that a method needed to be in it for changes that were bound to occur, so the amendment process was adopted.

If the first ten amendments had not been included in what was presented to the original thirteen states, we would not have a country right now. We would have had numerous nation states at war constantly just as the states of ancient Greece did where democracy was born. The framers of our constitution married a democratic and a republican form of government into a document that has allowed us to last for 250 years. The words in it mean what they originally meant. If a political faction wants to change the original meaning, use the amendment process.
