Keep Medicaid Expansion

Candace Foss, Payette County
February 19, 2025

I am writing on behalf of my niece, a mother of four, to share her deeply personal story of how Medicaid Expansion has been a lifeline for her family. Thanks to this program, she is alive today and able to be a healthy, productive member of society. Without Medicaid Expansion, she would not have access to the care that has been crucial to her survival and well-being.

Medicaid Expansion has provided her with essential healthcare services, including preventative care, immunizations for her children, doctor visits, and critical surgeries like her hysterectomy. Over the years, it has covered physical therapy, treatment for broken bones, mental health services, iron infusions, tonsillectomies for her children, and even dental and eye care.

Her story is heartbreaking. She was once married to a wonderful man who worked his way up at Simplot, eventually becoming a manager in Maryland. Tragically, he succumbed to addiction and died of an overdose, leaving her to raise their children alone. Returning to Idaho for support, she found herself in a difficult situation—working hard but still below the threshold to afford health insurance for her family. Medicaid Expansion gave her the opportunity to rebuild her life. With access to healthcare, she was able to take care of her health and her children’s needs, all while working and providing for them.

Medicaid Expansion must be protected. It provides essential support to families like mine, enabling them to stay healthy, stay together, and ultimately live fulfilling lives. We cannot afford to let this lifeline slip away. Medicaid Expansion is not just a safety net; it is a bridge to a better future for those who need it the most.

I ask that our elected officials in District 9, Representatives Boyle and Shirts and Senator Shippy protect Medicaid Expansion for all who depend on it. Thank you.
