Keep Your Brain Healthy

Janice Cawyer
January 28, 2026

This is the last week of January! We have started collecting 2026 dues and the new registration forms we have been asked to complete for all our members. I will be mailing the ones that aren’t picked up at the end of this week. If you are a member and haven’t received yours by the first week in February, please let me know. You can reach me here at the senior center @ 2(028) 257-3358.

Our monthly Bingo Game will be on Thursday, February 6th, from 6 to 8:00 p.m. It’s open to all ages, and it’s good for your brain health. We also have a puzzle in the social area that some of us are working on. I see they have almost finished the border.

When I lived in New Mexico 20-some years ago, we lived off-grid in the Gila National Forest. We had Propane lights, and we would work on puzzles to help pass the time in the evening. That period in my life was quite an adventure. I loved it. If you like puzzles, stop by the center anytime and see if you can help make progress. Puzzle work is also good for the brain.

Our Annual Death by Chocolate Bake Sale is on Friday, February 13th, from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. It’s your chance to buy some fresh-baked, homemade chocolate goodies for your sweetheart, neighbor, or friends to wish them the sweetest day ever on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th. Of course, it could be a special treat for yourself, that’s allowed, you know. I hope you can join us!

I’m trying a new menu format for February. I’m going with a calendar, and I will only be putting the main course down. I will give the entire list of entrees in the newspaper. I will send out the February menu to those of you I have emails for this week. Please let me know what you think.

One last thing about brain health: one of the most important ways to keep your brain healthy and functioning well in our older years is to socialize with others. This can be accomplished in many ways. We here at Seniors offer many opportunities. We have a morning Coffee Club on weekday mornings, starting at 6:00 a.m. and running until around 10:30 a.m. We do Chair Yoga on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. We have two hot meals each week, served family style on Wednesdays and Fridays. We occasionally have speakers on various topics, and, of course, what better way to interact with others than to work together by cleaning up after meals and doing the dishes?

These activities all foster a sense of community and belonging, which in turn makes your brain happy!

If you are new, how do you start? You begin by showing up, and you keep coming back. New things take a while for many of us to become comfortable being our true selves. It does work, but you need to put in time and effort to feel a sense of belonging. It’s another one of those mountains we have to learn how to climb.

Menu: Friday, January 30th: Clam Chowder, Turkey Sandwiches. Salad, Mandarin Oranges, and Upside Down Sunshine Cake. Wednesday, February 4th: Pork Chops with Sauerkraut, Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli/Cauliflower Mix, Peaches, Green Salad, Wheat Roll, and Fruit Crisp. Friday, February 6th: Tuna Casserole with peas and mushrooms, Bran Muffins, Garden Salad, Peaches, and Fruit Crisp.

Have a great week, everyone!
