It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Melvin Shelley on July 25, 2024, due to complications from a stroke. Gary was born in Pomona, California, on December 10, 1961, and spent his formative years in Payette and Cambridge, Idaho. He graduated from Cambridge High School, where he proudly played football as a “Cambridge Bulldog.” Gary’s love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hunting, fishing, and his enduring dream of being a cowboy. Although he never fully realized that dream, he found fulfillment working as a ranch hand and driving trucks to haul potatoes while living in Ontario, Oregon, and Fruitland, Idaho. His mother often described him as a handsome man who enjoyed flirting and brought joy wherever he went.

One of Gary’s greatest joys in life was his beloved Australian Shepherd dogs. His favorite, “Tank,” held a special place in his heart and passed away shortly before Gary. Their companionship was a testament to his loving and caring nature.

Despite never marrying or having children, Gary’s family was central to his life. He shared a particularly close bond with his mother, Betty Shelley, calling her every day just to chat. His warmth and concern for others extended to all his family members, whom he frequently called to check in on.

Gary’s optimistic and happy disposition remained steadfast, no matter the challenges he faced. His enduring positive attitude and genuine interest in the lives of those around him were hallmarks of his character.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Cecil “Dooley” Shelley, and his half-brother Ronald Shelley. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Betty Shelley, half-brothers Marvin Perkins and Frank (Vicky) Shelley, and half-sisters Melita Shelley and Shawna (Bob) Ianson.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Gary’s neighbors, Jim Bechtel and Lavada Sessums, for their unwavering assistance and friendship over the years.

Graveside services will be held at the Cambridge Cemetery on August 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Cambridge Baptist Church. Rest in peace, Gary. You will be deeply missed.
